Thermostat Ransomware and Workshop
This workshop will give attendees a solid and in-depth understanding of the security profile of many IoT devices, using readily available home heating thermostats. The session will set the scene with an introductory presentation followed by a demonstration covering hardware hacking topics such as reverse engineering, firmware analysis, remote code execution, even abusing OTA updates. We will also go through a PoC IoT ransomware attack specifically for thermostats.
Typically, access to embedded functionality in thermostats is via their JTAG ports so we will provide a primer on those as well as giving attendees the devices and tools to enable you to fully access the device and create your own hardware attack.
