Wi-Fi tracking on the tube?

SKY News 27.09.17

I was with Sky News yesterday to discuss and explain how a provider like TfL can collect Tube users’ location data, and why they’d do it.

The data could be worth big money, to enable geo-targeted poster placement and better planned retail spaces for example. If your device’s Wi-Fi is switched on, even if you’re not connected to a network, it can be tracked using it’s unique MAC address.

If for whatever reason you don’t like the idea of being tracked, just turn your Wi-Fi off, problem solved.
