Ken Munro is presenting: The S in IoT stands for Security. Why Connected Device Security is still Going Down the (Smart) Toilet
Why building secure connected devices is now more important than ever. Smart devices, or IoT, have a long history of security failings. The rush to market to gain first-mover advantage resulted in security often being overlooked. The first anyone knew was when security researchers or (worse) hackers found these issues. But there weren’t many consequences for the manufacturer.
A lack of regulation meant that there was no incentive to do security well. The CRA changes this, so if manufacturers don’t want to incur fines or have their products banned, compliance would be wise. This talk will cover many facepalm worthy moments, covering numbers security flaws that Ken and his team have found, together with advice for doing the security of embedded systems well.
